Professional Seminar on the Ecosystem of Innovation

Center for Research in Technology and Innovation Management in Complex Industrial Systems (CRiTIMiX), in collaboration with Iran Association for Management of Technology, hosted lecturer Dr. Hamid Mazloumi. He holds Ph.D. in industrial systems and is currently a faculty member at ESC Rennes School of Business. This seminar was held in order for the audience to become familiar with the concept of the ecosystem of innovation and to gain a deeper understanding of different risks affiliated with disregarding the ecosystem of a new good or service. The professional seminar was held on Monday, May 9, 2016 at Dr. Mashayekhi Hall, Sharif Graduate School of Management and Economics. More than 50 students and professors of related fields and also industrial experts from large firms took part in the event.

Complexity of new industries and business models, calls for numerous requirements for an innovation to succeed in the market. Along with goods and services developing to be more intricate, activities are entailed to grow in volume and complexity for products to be innovatively developed. Developing such products, therefore, would be done in a context of a broad ecosystem of innovation, including vertical members such as suppliers, system integrator or network leader firm, distribution system, after-sales services and also horizontal members, e.g. universities, research centers, competitors and other organizations necessary.

Integration is the key challenge arising from complexity in a product or service. It should, however, be noted that integration goes beyond mere technological integration. It incorporates different aspects and dimensions of innovation projects, including the members of the ecosystem of innovation. In other words, in order to create value for a new good or product, managing the process of turning creative ideas into new products, is just the beginning of the path to success. For an innovative product to be well profitable over time, support and cooperation of other companies or organizations involved in creating or complementing the product’s value, is also enlisted. These organizations would build an ecosystem with innovation in the center, which guarantees continual value creation. In this regard, understanding the ecosystem of innovation and proper positioning of the firm, is vital for each and every company before launching a product in the market. Nonetheless, ongoing innovation in an ecosystem requires active management of external organization. This is more than just an understanding of the ecosystem.

Besides introducing the concept of innovation ecosystem and its different aspects, Dr. Mazloumi also described different risks of the ecosystem of innovation, including complementary risk, execution risk and co-innovation risk. You can download his lecture here.
